The Great Famine

The great famine is unlike most famines in that it wasn't just the product of a harvest failure, or a series of harvest failures. It was the product of an ecological disaster in the form of the fungus. And what that meant was that there would be no return to the status quo ante because the damage inflicted on the podato was permanent. The population that was kept alive by the podato before 18 forty five could not be sustained any more.
