In a modern context, i suppose the greatest association that we've got with spartacus is with how he's been cooptered by hollywood and the media. Well, there was a novel written in the early 19 fifties by howard fast, which was then developed into a film. There were some italian films earlier on, but it's certainly the most famous one, made by stanley cubrick in 19 60 and star in kirk douglas. But being made in 19 60, it's often seen as a film that's put out at a time when the civil rights movement in america is gathering pace. And it makes direct reference to that. While
