There are certain obsessive themes that shakespeare keeps returning to over and over again, almost compulsively. One is the goodness and purity of the young man, whom he really puts up on a pedestal. The speaker dwells repeatedly on his own inadequacy. And finally, sort of capping that off, the desire for immortality, or for eternal youth - both for himself and for the young man.
