What Is an Anthology?

The oldest anthology we know about is ancient Greek from the first century BC. It was compiled by a Greek poet called Meliega, and his idea was to gather epigrams by 47 different Greek poets. And he assigned each of those poets a flower, a kind of emblem by which they'd be recognised in his collection,. He called it the garland or anthology in Greek, so that's where our word comes from. So it's a gathering of flowers, that's always been the idea. In the Middle Ages we have Florilegia, which is the Latin version of the same word, and they are collections of extracts from religious texts used for kind of instruction purposes. Then
