Auro was a busy, wealthy city of between 20,000 and 40,000 inhabitants. Paulus's father probably would have been a former slave who got his start handling commercial activity for one of the rich aristocrats. Most free men considered it beneath them to work for someone else so it was usually slaves that acted asCommercial agents for aristocrats with capital to invest. The Western Mediterranean was an integrated system of exchange moving those goods to feed the enormous Roman world.
