The book is about class or the performance of class. This sort of performance is especially potent within academia. Can one better themselves? Can you get yourself out of poverty? And to what extent are you succeeding once you've got there and does it make you happy? Tarte: I actually see it as quite an aspirational, wide-eyed, uncritical portrait of a structure and an elitism that shouldn't really be idolized.
