DKA is a potentially life threatening presentation which can occur in type 1 and in type 2 diabetics. We're defined as a triad of hyperglycemia ketosis, a metabolic acidosis and we also need to be aware of that little gotcha of the euglycemic keto acidosiswhich can catch all of us out. And finally if we're getting a patient who's collapsed in DKA then we need to be extremely careful and aware they've got profound metabolic acidosis, they're hypovolemic and the risk of complications is very high.
