What Is a Causal Explanation?
Critics of the mechanistic account are in the business of moving the goal posts when it comes to what counts as a good explanation, says Em yel. A mechanism is a set of causes that are all working together to produce an outcome. Mechanisms can't be sparse or networked and need lots of detail. The worry we have is that when you broaden mechanism so much, all that it means is causation and causal structure. It just means you've got a bunch of causes that work together.
