The Life and Times of Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens lived in Tabasdock House near this site from 1851 to 1860. He was at the peak of his success and lived there with his wife, Catherine, and their ten children. While he was living here, Dickens started his own weekly magazine, Household Words. There was a new kind of school for young children, open just around the block,. by the east corner of the square, almost backing on to Dickens's garden. You could probably hear of the children playing. The school is based on playing with simple wooden blocks, singing and dancing, and spending time in nature.
