Historians have a problem with functionalist approaches to history, says Richard Zia. He thinks that when you have your anthropologist's gentleman turning up in the tropics he doesn't just simply be looking at himself and say, oh, I'm white. One of the curious things about human beings as historical actors is they work in ways which are sometimes paradoxical. This has always to be demonstrated by the historian. And they're always going to be very complicated," said Zia.
