First amendment protects the right to the free exercise of religion, and that the state cannot prevent the free exercise. But you yourself cannot impose those religious views on other people. If you hold any kind of power over people, you are not allowed to use that to force them to believe the same things you do. i think that that's been the american understanding right from the beginning.
