Cohen Tellpro and the Church Committee
In 1971, an outfit called the Citizens' Commission to investigate the FBI broke into an FBI field office in media, Pennsylvania. They made off with over 1,000 documents containing classified information and later described Cohen Tellpro to reporters. This treasure trove of information provided indisputable evidence that the FBI was conducting criminal acts. It also targeted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in a conspiracy to discredit his activities and, if possible, prompt him to take his own life. In 1964, Coretta Scott King received an anonymous package containing recordings of King's alleged sexual activities outside of marriage. A copy of this letter was found in the work files of Deputy FBI Director William C. Sullivan.
