Homo sapiens in their present form have been around for about 180,000 years. But we've actually only been going to school as we understand it for depending on how you count a thousand, a couple thousand maybe. For 99% of our history we lived in small hunter-gatherer bands that educated themselves or educated their youth in a very different way. They don't expect any serious work from kids. Kids may do a little hunting and gathering, but in a very playful spirit. And they're not expected to provide major provisions for the band.
