Stuff You Missed in History Class

CHAPTER

The Story of Susie and Edward King

Susie King was a member of the 33rd United States colored troops regiment. She survived at least two shipwrecks in addition to this one during her life. In 1872, she applied for her late husband's army pension and was granted a sum of a hundred dollars. Unfortunately though, she lost at least part of it in the collapse of the Freedmen's Savings Bank. The bank was chartered by Congress in 1865 to benefit black soldiers, former slaves, their descendants, folks like that. It collapsed in 1874 due to a combination of factors including the panic of 1873, policy changes, and mismanagement and fraud.
