Nicolle elizabeth bant is assistant professor of history and gender, sexuality and feminine studies at duke university. Intimate communities argues that women who worked as military and civilian nurses, doctors and midwives during this turbulent period built the national community one relationship at a time. These bonds transcended the divides of social class, region, gender and language. In fact, while reading this book, it reminds me of my childhood spent in he hospital where my mother worked as a nurse.
