The worst thing that could happen is death, which leaves no more options open. Of course you could find the ultimately good thing, the way in which to come effectively immortal. But there's no real equality on the scales of death versus anything else. It stands to reason that we are more vigilant about what we have lose and take chances to avoid precipitous plunges in well being.
