The Crisis of Chivalry in the Middle Ages
There was no crisis of chivalry in the late middle ages. The perfect fusion between ideology and function, chevalric ideals, landholding military service did break. But chivalry itself remained a powerful driver of behavior and expectations. Chivalry even survived into the early modern period. Nobles never lost that sense of military responsibility. At heart, knights were warriors. Deeds of arms were what chivalry was fundamentally concerned with. Burning rapine and pillage ambushes were perfectly fine, so was paid service. So was getting rich through war.
