The 19th century has turned towards a more cynical view of human nature. The old metaphysical superstitions that people dogmatically believed in, the universalism of Kant and Socrates and Plato is standing dispirited and discouraged if it is left standing at all. But Nietzsche says there are good reasons why all philosophical dogmatizing, however definitive its heirs may be, may nevertheless have been no more than a noble childishness and tyrannism.
