The Meaning of Negro Spirituals

In 1947 Howard Thurman who's an African American civil rights leader and he was a scholar at he's long gone now but he taught at Boston University. He engaged the criticism of African American spirituals that many critics said it's too otherworldly. On the contrary he argued this sung faith served to deepen the slaves capacity for endurance. The spirituals encompassed the Christian belief in a final judgment a day in which all wrongs we may write. It also included a belief in personal immortality and reunion with loved ones.
