The Earth's Gravitational Memory Effect in LIGO
LIGO does a really good job of trying to be independent from the Earth as much as possible, but there's something that the Earth has that Ligo just cannot escape. And that's the Earth's gravity. Right, we have these two mirrors where light is bouncing back and forth between them. Imagine they're getting like squeezed a little bit closer together or a little bit further apart. Even if the gravitational wave wants to pass through and leave them a little bit farther apart, the Earth's gravitational field will sort of pull them back.
