The Evolution of the Insect's Gears
Insects have gears on the backs of their hind legs that they use to jump. Each tooth is about 80 micrometers wide, so 80 millionths of a meter. They are differently shaped than most gears we use in the technological world. And this is useful, apparently, because it would help prevent the gears from being sheared off or broken off if there is a slight misalignment during a jump.
