Plato's Argument for the State
In Plato's Republic, the main character Glaucon wants a city where people don't have to live like pigs. He describes Calipolis as an ideal utopian city for actual people. Some think that the message in the book is that actually the city of pigs is great and we should just settle for it. But I don't think that's the case. I think that Plato is really saying here that if we were like animals, we could live more easily,. but because we have more desires for other kinds of things.
