Why Did English Become an International Language?

Before engulish, there wasn't a completely international language. But i think probably french was the closest. So you had these two world empires both speaking english. And now it's become to he point where it's is what's called a network effect. A network effect where eventually, if a lot of people join one thing in one network, that eventually it becomes dominant,. like a monopoly.
