With social spending, it tends to be relatively stable. Of course, you get the big jump back in 1964 when Medicaid comes online,. Medicare, it posts that social spending tends to increase at a relatively steady pace. Defense spending doesn't follow the population. It follows events. The real takeaway here is that we don't see massive declines on one side or the other as Republicans and Democrats trade places as the majority party.
