Introduction
Richard the Lionheart was captured by Henry VI of Germany in 1192. The Emperor wants 100,000 silver marks to set him free - a true king's ransom. Richard has ordered all English abbots and anyone else who can afford it to pay up. He says that so we may know how much we are bound to return thanks to each. If he does, there will be some serious payback for those who haven't helped him.
