Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast
Skiszdikovsky's Promenade
Revel's orchestration when it came out was so good that another composer slash conductor who had made an earlier arrangement, Henry Wood, banned performances of his own arrangement in order to not be compared to Ravel. Skiszdikovsky didn't have such problems with his ego, and by starting the piece with the strings rather than the brass, he puts his stamp on the arrangement right away. It's as if Ms. Orksky calls out to you to come over to see one of the paintings, and you dutifully follow him,. trying to keep up with his speedy pace.
