Punk became the antidote for the preening and swaggering of mainstream rock in the 1970s. New Wave bands adopted effeminate or at least inrogynous looks. Carol Pope fronted Rough Trade, a Toronto group whose very name was a term from gay subculture. Many fans found these attitudes to be refreshing and liberating.
