The Decline of Community Membership

In many ways, society has become so much richer. That suggests to me that while there are many like gross benefits to joining, the net benefits are less. So the under joining isn't actually as bad as the decline in joining would suggest. But I think it's an economist, I'm very open to the idea that there is some optimal level of joining and it probably doesn't involve you being out at a group meeting every night of the week. Most people feel as though they want a strong group of people around them. And particularly when it gets down to zero, it's hard to see how that can be optimal.
