The Emergent Complexity of Design and Engineering

Design is taught that engineers can engineer something or designers can design something with a high confidence. As we're seeing with transformers and machine learning, we have more of an emergent complexity where they don't predict the outcome. The air conditioner removes heat from your home and it puts it outside. It actually puts more heat outside that it removes because it's not completely efficient. On top of that, it requires electricity to run and where the electricity is generated is put more heat into the atmosphere. But then again, there are three billion air conditioners in the world and they've been running for 10, 20 years,. That's enough to change the temperature of the atmosphere.
