What's the Difference Between Short and Long Compositions?

I've always been more concerned with the words, but there's a lot of thought that goes into these illustrations. I'm looking to see how they portrayed the scene from the book. Another idea that just pops up all the time and I see it throughout this project is just unseen work. These things being decisions we make when no one's looking, when no one can see our inner thoughts.
