There was more of a genuinely intellectual culture happening on the right in the 50s and 60s with people like largely the crowds surrounding William F. Buckley's national review, which was a much more highbrow venue than it is now. And I think that kind of development of a kind of a right intellectual culture was something that happened in part because those were people who didn't think that they had a chance of entering into the conversations that the left was happening.
