The History of the Camels in America

In 1863, a camel express service was tried between New San Pedro and Tucson, Arizona. Some of the camels were abused so much that they died. Frenchmen in the Southwest nursed them back to health by 1870. The animals carried salt and hay to the Comstock gold and silver mines. These camels were then sent to Arizona where they hauled ore from the Silver King mine to Yuma. Others were simply released into the desert near Maricopa Wells.
