The battle of hon shaut forced the duke of york to finally abandon his futile siege of dunkirk. Bad weather and the french defenders inside dunkirk intentionally dumped all their waste water into the allied trenches. The british could not extract their heavy baggage nor the few heavy guns they did have. His retreat from dunkirk was a slow slog, with all the allies now in a stumbling retreat.
