The Importance of Monasteries in Society
There's a contradiction right at the heart of monasteries which is to make them work financially they needed revenue from land, land and needs management. The idea of isolation is always compromised by the fact that you have to deal with the outside world both in terms of managing revenues but also farming. In some ways there's a kind of inevitability about the kind of conflict that the distribution represents because contradictions right there in everything monasteries do.
