Nurse comes into English from French and Latin but if you follow its roots back to Proto Indo-European where it kind of starts, it goes back to a word that means the one who breastfeeds. Two mother in that modern sense of to bring up children in some particularly maternal way is a mid 19th century meaning. You can trace in the suffixes the work that women are doing and the work that's associated with women.
