The Problem for Urban Horse Owners Like Luke
Horses kept on estates can often be seized by the authorities. They're then taken to what's called the pound, a secure centre where they're rehomed or sometimes even destroyed. Limerick Animal Welfare has set up a horse refuge in the surrounding countryside around 40 minutes drive south from Limerick outside the town of Kilmalog. There are projects operating in Limerick schools to educate young people about how best to look after a horse. But Anna Gallagher believes they don't offer the continuity required to really make a difference.
