Beethoven's use of scales becomes a hallmark throughout his work in ways that are both mysterious and wonderful. In Beethoven's later symphonies he will explore more depths of emotion, but here all of this is just in service of getting us back to the main theme. Remember those toy soldiers from the second movement? Well now they return in both a proud and somewhat mocking way as Dabrasse starts to take his home.
