The Maya in the Classic Period
In classic times, people did not self identify that way. They didn't even identify that way when the spanish first came to the new world. So instead of a landscape with these vast jungle spaces, which we see to day, i expect it was just the opposite. You know, there were probably people everywhere selling things to everyone else.
