South African leader Nelson mandella visited miami during a tour of the united states. The city commission recinded the resolution that it had prepared in honor of mandella and refused to grant him any kind of welcome. This actually led to duelling demonstrations and street fighting when mandella visited the mMiami beach convention center to give a speech. It did break down largely on racial lines, with black floridians on one side and cubanfloridians, as well as jewish floridian, on the other.
