Tilly shilling invented a washer to control the flow of fuel and air into an engine. When spit fires were going into negative g, there was fuel that was leaking into the engines - causing missfire. The little washer was officially called the r a e restrictor after the royal aircraft establishment where she worked. But some hilarious wag, some male colleague from rols royce, christened it miss shilling's orifice.
