CHAPTER

The Christian Crusades in the Levant

The Holy Roman Empire had a direct influence over the Scandinavian nations that evolved from Viking culture such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Eastern Orthodox Christianity was approaching the lands of the Baltauphinic peoples from their southeast. The West Slavs established a nation called Great Moravia centred around the modern countries of Czech Republic and Slovakia. Originally this would be where the origins of what would become the Cyrillic alphabet took place but Great Moravia would align itself with Rome. As we enter into the age of the Christian Crusades which were military Roman Catholic missions to the Holy Land in the Levant from the end of the 11th century the Baltic states became surrounded by Christian nations.
