In spelling, we add an S or E-S to a verb to indicate present tense in third person. But something very interesting happens when we pronounce those words with those endings. The pronunciations actually vary depending on the final sound in the verb. Most scholars think the modern pronunciation rules were largely in place during the Elizabethan period.
