In 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white rider and she was arrested. Out of the boycotts Martin Luther King Jr. would emerge as the inspirational leader of this fledgling civil rights movement in America. He recalled how soon he had begun receiving threatening phone calls in letters by January 1956 just a month into the boycott.
