The Importance of Repeating Words

DH Lawrence has taught me how to convey things as they are felt. He prepares me by generating a sense of visceral or physical longing for a landscape, often by repetition. Yvette always expected something to come down the slant of the road from Papalwick and she always lingered at the landing window. Everything is preparatory, everything is waiting with a sense of longing and desire and expectation. And the last sentence Lawrence gives us before we see Yvette is that of the grey rock, cropping out from the dark hillside.
