Special Effects: The Fourth Kind of Deception

The radio unit sent out a barrage of fake messages. If the Nazis were decoding them, they would detect a major mobilization of American troops. On the ground, they developed this fourth kind of deception and they called it Special Effects or Atmosphere. The army trucks that carried the troops were large. Empty trucks were one long bench, along each side of the truck inside and was covered with a top line. And so just the back end was open. So we would put one or two men on the back end because you couldn't see into the truck,. You couldn't see how many people were in there. It was, you know, play acting.
