In the fish, though, this division was part of what was just happening during their normal growth. The team showed that this strange division only seemed to happen about a week into the zebrah fish's life. It suggests that it may be a way to just make sure that enough skin to go around during this early growth period,. covering the surface of the animal, preventing everything from leaking out is more important than having al the usually essential dana.

DNA is usually essential for healthy cells, but the researchers think this puzzling finding may be a temporary measure to help the fish produce skin more rapidly during growth spurts.
