The Fountain of the Whale

Herman Melville's Moby Dick was published in 1851. The book is about a sperm whale that lives for 6,000 years and breathes through his spherical alone. He can only breathe by inhaling the disengaged air in the open atmosphere. Herman Melville: It should still remain a problem whether these spoutings are, after all, really water or nothing but vapor.
