In Our Time: Science

CHAPTER

The Future of Memory

Do you think the widening amount of information that comes in, Mark and Bower, to people through television and now have the internet and the radio is overwhelming individual memory? Do you think this is something which will pass or do you think it's something that we will want to keep exploring intensively for any foreseeable future? Dr Nancy: What I think we have to do is avoid tuning it into a cult of memory. We have to keep realizing that memory is for users in the present or to inform us about the present and guide our actions in the present. But I don't think that neuroscience in itself is going to tell us how to conduct ourselves in the new millennium.
