The Real Story

CHAPTER

Is There a Labour Government?

I think they'd been there from the very inception of the Labour Party. The ambiguity about whether we were in favour of old-style nationalisation, which was appropriate during the Second World War and then carried forward immediately afterwards. And one of my failures in the eight years I was in Cabinet was not to argue sufficiently for what I call communitarianism. So the government becomes an enabler, a government that works with people rather than on them. We had to learn the lessons very harshly and the present conservative government are learning the same lessons.
