Thomas Payne's Views on Religion

I can understand people feeling that way about Payne, given his pen, right? I could imagine you thinking, well, the SOB is getting what he deserves. Let's say a little something about his views on religion. Is there anything in his background that might account for why he took such a dim view of organized religion? Yeah, if there is, it's the fact that he saw the evils of the union of religion and state. He fought very much against that in his writings, especially in the rights of man.
